Early education is very important for children’s future. You can find for your kids fun and effective reading games to get them ready to read. Children learn effortlessly and deeply in their very early years. They can learn almost everything with adequate support. Therefore, encouraging and treating the learning as the enjoyable play is important.
Below you can find the opinion of Geoffrey Canada (president and chief executive of the Harlem Children’s Zone and president of the Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy Charter Schools).
Start Early and Provide Support
I believe all children can learn. And I believe that it is never too late to help a child to succeed academically. However, as someone who has worked with thousands of children from birth through college, I can tell you without a doubt that the earlier you help a child get on track for academic success, the easier, cheaper and more successful that support will be.
Scientific research and my own experience show that a child’s trajectory toward success begins at birth, and even before. Given the constraints of our public-education system – particularly the limitation on classroom hours (which we absolutely need to change) — if children fall behind, it becomes enormously difficult to catch them up. As they grow and fall further behind, it becomes exponentially harder to get them to grade level. So while the educators who do the superhero work of turning teenagers around should be applauded, the smarter investment for public education over the long haul is to make sure children get on track as early as possible. (…)
Pre-kindergarten classes, if done right, are an enormous benefit for children, but they are not the sole answer to our country’s education crisis. Once children – particularly those from families with few resources — are on grade level at an early age, they need the ongoing assistance of great schools, enriching after-school programs and comprehensive wraparound supports that will keep them on track through college.
If the goal of our education system is to produce the country’s future work force and secure our economic strength, we need to improve the odds for all of our children by giving them the best educational foundation possible – and that means taking advantage of those early years when young children’s brains are undergoing explosive growth and forming the architecture for academic success.
